kalimero is back again. their seventh catalogue number is standing in the wings awaiting you as a three track ep, one original & two remixes. melchior bachmann delivers his second release on kalimero together with his producing mate extd. will, a new berlin-based talent and long-term companion of the labels artists. they created *play*, a deep tech-house revelation that is simply catching everything what each of us is referring as to groovy and pressing it into eight minutes of pure emotional dancefloor energy. this is also caused by dennis degenharts great singing work. the remixes are contributed by mario aureo and luis leon. marios remix is keeping the tech-house grooves and keys and transforms them into a marching and pumping peaktime tune. side b is completely left to luis leon, a very talented producer and dj from peru, who did nothing less than turning *play* into an deep house anthem - a journey that has all the time to evolve itself.

after alec troniqs glorious 2012 strikes like pimpernuckel and rueffel ep and prosperous remixes for leesa or kanzler & wischnewski, he roughs up the club season with yet another super-creative bunch of dance floor tracks. with fluffernutter our pastry chef created a scuzzy mix of sweeties.and everyone can sing is a slow and muddy pounding house smacker.xanthippe is a cheering singsong tune for a little less conversation but a little more action on the parquets. this fluffernutter ep unmistakably pushes to movement.

the e.p kicks off with she can dance, a slow burning acid number that has elements of deep, grooving house from the detroit school. in fact, the second cut low control bares the influence of detroit too, with its murky, dubbed-out chords ala luke hess moving into a punchy bassline with minimal but functional drum patterns. proceedings get a bit more bouncy on the smoking hat, a quirky acid romp on the less daft side of ceephax, and the perfect soundtrack to accompany a feature-length documentary about.... a smoking hat. finishing up the e.p is fudge fingas remix of low control, the only man qualified to make an already deep as fuck track even deeper. theres been some on-point criticisms about a lot recent deep stuff getting lost in noodly jazz territory, but we are in no danger of that nonsense with fudge fingas at the controls: accomplished a musician he may be, hes never been one to lose the way, and this mix proves his deft and subtle remix talents. dabj done done it again, and hopefully this is the first in a long line of productions from vernon.

over the last year i have traveled to canada frequently for gigs and got to know the small but healthy electronic music scene there. cities like montreal, vancouver and toronto have brought forth many established artists over the past few years, such as egyptrixx, azari & iii, basic soul unit, jacques greene, lunice and sixtoo, but 2012 has seen a new breed of no-nonsense house and techno producers come up via labels like turbo recordings and naked lunch. this *dovercourt ep* features three very talented producers: kevin mcphee, nautiluss and gingy. their tracks are a dedication to their hometown of toronto. being removed from the house/techno epicentres of berlin and london, these three are much less interested in what is fashionable or trendy, and more in bringing us straight to the point, no frails jacking house music. i have been playing these three extensively in my dj sets, and i hope you will too. so out to toronto, this one is for you! enjoy. martyn

knox is the band brainchild of brother-sister duo nic and eliza coolidge. hailing from boston and new york, the siblings released their second ep, here, on december 3rd, and it is a big step forward for the band. formed less than two years ago, in march 2011, knox finds themselves working with the likes of john tejada and kuxxan suum on this release, and the outcome is stunning. here is five-song set full of ice and echoes. it runs as close to the third rail of impersonation, but flies away so quickly that knox sounds contextual and perfectly fresh. the influences from james blake is clear: the swooping, bomber bass and half-timey compressed dub beats, here could also easily be an inventive b-side to the latest how to dress well album. but, with the limited scale, interspersed remixes and foundling status in the scene, i would say it is likely a more impressive feat. the ep as a whole is desolate. expansive spaces filled with cold little beats and vocal washes, exploring in the course of five songs an icescape aesthetic with a sense of place usually reserved for full-length albums. the remixes blend so seamlessly that i didnt even realize they were during my first, casual listen.

oliver hos alias for the less obvious techno stompers has always been full of surprises. although you can take the man out of the rave, but not the rave out of the man, raudives >traffic ep< is a retro futuristic team of hermaphrodites. four tracks that recall metal dance - the genre that never was - as well as disco elements, house hints, a techno taste and wave wonders. a record made for sven vaeth and trevor jackson, with >beams< already on heavy rotation with dixon and ame for a while now.

for now is the second ep by brooklyn duo beacon, five songs that continue the bands exploration of the dark spaces under the surface of human relationships. as with the bands debut ep no body, for now is a record that conceals a great deal of depth beneath a melodic veneer— again, there is a stark contrast between thomas mullarneys honeyed vocals and the words he is singing, although this time the mood is perhaps less sinister and more reflective.

praterei returns with their 5th instalment and so do those twins with their second successive offering to the vienna stable! the ingredients on this one are similar to the last but the result is no less stirring. the rough and ready side of the 12 belongs to the aptly entitled >house< and youll see why. never straying too far from the old school... shuffling beats and rims keep things swinging. each layer of the melody is deep in youll be whistling this later territory and intermittent vocal shouts remind us exactly what it is we are listening to. the flip beckons for you to walk with me and that you must. the beat saunters along but always with a sanguine skip and our seductive protagonist guides us through the warm textures of rich pads and stabs. this is one of those records where, for both tracks, the message could not be more perfectly translated. every aspect contributes to a common goal, and thats a rare and quite special thing.

dope me / does caroline know? is a slightly clubbier affair-less sun ra and more soul capsule-but still possesses the air of strangeness that makes the duo so unique. each artist leaves his mark within the first few measure of dope me. the steady high-hats and flawless kick drum are straight out of dazes playbook, while the nervous piano and 3 chairs-style claps are unmistakably bruno. as for the slurred vocal pleading >dope me..dope me<, thats anyones guess. the track carries on for a solid nine minutes as half-melodies and quasi-hooks slide in and out of the mix. the b-side, does caroline know?, takes us deeper and darker. the drums are plodding, the mood is ominous, and a series of dreamlike flourishes add to an already eerie groove. like the a-side, its a surrealistic style of house that only these two could deliver. the artwork, as usual, is done by daze maxim.

when discussing producers with consistently good outputs, few compare with jan driver. just pulled out his debutalbum amatilda last year, jan driver again dished out an extra tasty and promising morsel: this one-shot named peaker comes with a gigantic brightness in sound and is not less than a slammy hand-clapping celebratory basher. the and heavy subbasses are literally all over the place. jan driver signatures for sure! it has the exact fair amount of tension a track needs to sound excited and to infect your eardrum. on the flip side, action flowers rework pad the track with a golden summerdress, adding a magnificent arpeggio sequence so perfectly complementary to the original sound, its shimmering all the way to the solar system.peaker is proven to be one of our favourite summer releases in 2012 thus far, with its take on a slower beat and more of a late night come-down vibe apparent. you know that feeling when you hear that perfect song for the first time? well, it just happened. twice. weve got goosebumps. were feverish. were sweaty.time for the summer to come. now we impatiently wait. were just a little excited, you know?

unusually for a record (for me,at least), constants collects tracks written in four very different moments in time: some are recent - so recent ive only had the opportunity to play them out just a handful of times - while others are over one year old. i really wish the story behind this ep would be a bit more interesting so this text could completely blow your mind but im afraid there were no dragons, no sex, no drugs and definitely no rock n roll involved. all four were mostly produced by me while sipping coffee and wearing boxer shorts in front of a computer. i could somehow try to describe the music on here but it would probably take less for you to give it a listen. however, if you happen to be one of the humans that prefer reading about music. anyway, im really happy to see these finally out, especially on a label i have always looked up to like vakant. i really used to think smoke, kaden and ozer were aliens at some hopefully you will enjoy this music as much as i loved writing and playing it out.

if you like the sound of cheap analog synthesizers from the mid 80s, drum machines and strangely pitched human voices this might be the record for you. a small warning about the quite melodic and poppy arrangement, it is not minimal, nor pure drones. sorry. estelle ep has nothing to do with the car Škoda estelle, even though some instruments used on the songs were produced during the same years. estelle ep is more or less a result of the new kranglan broadcast hardware studio environment. the plan was simple: to get rid of the machines that were not being used and to make the rest communicate with each other. this resulted in some very fine jams where realtime feelings and spontaneous ideas were converted into music. each track is its own moment in time.
